24 March 2026 Manchester city centre (shops and lunch) Coach to Gorton Monastery (talk and refreshments) |
Tuesday 24 March 2026 Coach to Gorton Monastery where we will have a one hour talk on the History and restoration of the building. Followed by tea/coffee and cake. Known as the Manchester Taj Mahal Gorton Monastery is a grade II listed building. Designed by Edward Pugin in the neo-gothic style it is said to be an architectural master piece both inside and out. Originally a Franciscan friary the building ceased to be used for Christian worship in 1989. Abandoned, falling into neglect and vandalised the restoration began 2007. We will hear the fascinating story of how the building was brought back to life. This architectural gem is now transformed into a unique venue for weddings, community events and corporate gatherings.
